He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Art from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and a Master of Fine Arts in Dramaturgy from Columbia University, New York. Finishing his thesis in 2015. Moreover, the Thesis is still on their website. In which he stressed the importance of township dramaturgy in South Africa. Saying township plays created post 1994 seem to have less significance than those before. Arguing that they should be of somewhat the same value.

He has trained under such esteemed theatre practitioners as Anne Bogart, Gregory Mosher, and Arnold Aronson to name a few. Lunga has worked as an actor and writer for both the stage and television. So, he has an extensive resumé of work in theatre. He also studied scriptwriting at AFDA Film School.
