Kajal Maharaj was born on the 18 August 1984 in Durban, KwaZulu Natal Province in South Africa. However, she was raised in Johannesburg until the age of six when her family relocated to her hometown of Durban.

By The Nateshwar Dance Academy and danced at The Playhouse company in 1995 and 1996 for Indian dance shows directed by Smeetha Maharaj. Moreover, is also trained in hip hop and modern dance.
