The action drama series Z’bondiwe on e.tv is where South African actress Matshepo Sekgopi is best known for playing Esihle.
She appeared occasionally in Season 1. Then she got promoted to the starring role for Season 2. Moreover, in 2016 she had a guest role on the second season of the Mzansi Magic drama series Saints and Sinners
Basic background information of Matshepo Sekgopi
Matshepo Sekgopi was born on the 18th of November in 1996. So she is only 25 years old as of 2022. Most people know her as Dimpho on the Magic 1’s The river. Sekgopi grew up in Kagiso, West Rand. Where she used to participate a lot in Drama and Creative arts. Showing that, this passion for acting came a long way from her childhood.
However, before venturing in acting. Matshepo started out with beauty pageants. Which opened her eyes to the world of performance and opportunities in the world of arts. Sekgopi’s parents were very notable of her interests as a child. They saw that she was interested in beauty pageants and performances.
“Because I was exposed to the arts and performance at a younger age, my family decided to hire an agent who managed to get me auditions… I went to a series of them but nothing was coming through. I later lost faith in getting any voiceovers or acting gigs but didn’t stop auditioning.” said the young actress on her background in the arts.
Her first gig came at a surprise as she had lost hope
When she least expected it. She got a call from Bomb Productions informing her that she had nabbed the role of Zingi in popular SABC 1 show Soul Buddyz.
“I was getting compliments for my acting. People were telling me that ‘this was just the beginning for you, you’re still going to go far’ – that’s when I told myself ‘this is what I need to do growing up’.”
Then later on, her role as Ntombi in Zone 14 sparked numerous other gigs. In A Place Called Home, Isibaya and Ingoma. Despite the many roles she has played over the years. Sekgopi feels that Dimpho in The River—where she co-stars with a cast that includes actors like Moshidi Motshegwa, Sindi Dlathu, Presley Chweneyagae, and Hlomla Dandala—was her breakout performance in 2018—was the year she really broke out.

Sekgopi expressed that the Dimpho role was tricky at first saying: “Portraying Dimpho at first was very tricky but somewhat second nature to me. Being surrounded by all these Thespians, I felt that I had to bring it. They were not afraid to look ugly or vulnerable on television – which motivated me to believe that I too can also get there,” Sekgopi says.
“I embraced the cast and crew and told myself that I was given a wonderful opportunity to portray a real black child who had all these big dreams.”
However, she got form real bonds with her collegues
Despite the difficulty she initially had. Sekgopi ended up forming true bonds on the show. She is still in touch with Motshegwa, who portrayed her on-screen mother. And, who controversially left the show after season one. Sekgopi considers her co-star Chweneyagae as a “true brother”.
“Everyone on set gets along; from the actors who live at the mansion, to the ones at the village, we are like one big happy family,” she said.
